Expert Window Well Egress in Alexandria, VA

Protect your basement from catastrophic window well flooding while meeting emergency egress safety standards. Unprotected or improperly drained window wells act like giant buckets during heavy downpours, putting immense water pressure against window seals and creating serious water intrusion risk. Our team installs heavy-duty egress wells tied directly into your property's drainage network, keeping your lower level dry, bright, and safe year-round.

AllGreen Solutions designs and installs window well egress and drainage systems for residential and commercial properties throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland, including Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, McLean, Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring, Germantown, Gaithersburg, Fredericksburg, and Manassas. Our installations meet International Residential Code (IRC) egress requirements, ensuring your below-grade windows provide a safe emergency exit while also functioning as a reliable drainage solution.

Every window well installation begins with a site assessment to evaluate soil conditions, existing drainage patterns, and proximity to your foundation. We size the well to meet egress code minimums — typically at least 9 square feet of clear floor area, 36 inches wide, and 36 inches of projection from the foundation — and select heavy-gauge galvanized steel or polycarbonate well materials rated for long-term underground exposure. A properly sized gravel sump bed is installed beneath the well to collect and disperse water, and where soil drainage is insufficient, we connect the well directly to your French drain system, storm drain, or a dedicated sump pump line to actively remove accumulated water.

For properties with existing window wells that flood repeatedly, we diagnose the root cause — whether it's a missing or undersized cover, inadequate gravel depth, a disconnected drain line, or a well positioned too low relative to grade — and implement the right repair. We also install clear polycarbonate covers that block rain and debris while preserving natural light and maintaining egress accessibility.

Properly installed window well egress systems protect your basement from water intrusion, reduce hydrostatic pressure against foundation walls, and ensure your below-grade living spaces meet life-safety codes required by Virginia and Maryland building departments. Call AllGreen Solutions to schedule a window well egress and drainage assessment for your property today.

Window Well Egress FAQ

Common questions about window well egress in Alexandria, VA.

Yes, any basement bedroom in Alexandria requires a code-compliant egress opening with a window well when the window sits below grade. The well must provide enough clear space for a person to exit safely in an emergency.

The window well must cover at least 9 square feet and measure at least 36 inches in each horizontal direction. Wells deeper than 44 inches also require a permanently fixed ladder that does not block the window opening.

Without proper drainage, yes, window wells can collect water during Alexandria's heavy storms, especially where clay soil slows absorption. AllGreen Solutions includes drainage as part of every window well egress installation to direct that water away from your foundation.

Yes, we install window well egress systems in existing Alexandria homes, which involves excavating alongside the foundation wall and cutting the opening to meet code dimensions. Our team assesses your specific foundation type and soil conditions before work begins.

It can, if the opening and well are not sealed and drained correctly. AllGreen Solutions seals the wall penetration and integrates drainage so the new well does not become a water entry point for your Alexandria basement.

A compliant egress window in Alexandria must have a net clear opening of at least 5.7 square feet, be at least 20 inches wide and 24 inches tall, and have a sill no higher than 44 inches above the finished floor. AllGreen Solutions can measure your existing window during an on-site visit and confirm whether it meets current Virginia code.

Tommy and John at AllGreen Landscape did an incredible job of designing a new driveway and entrance to our house, as well is helping us find a great pool contractor and doing all the landscaping around it and a new patio. I especially appreciate the fact that their crew has been with them for more than a decade, and they are all great guys. The whole team has worked with us closely to keep it all maintained and looking beautiful.

I’m so incredibly grateful for the breathtaking work AllGreen Solutions did for us and cannot say enough wonderful things about them. They transformed my yard from an overgrown eyesore into a beautiful oasis beyond what I imagined. The crew was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and truly listened to what I wanted. They worked nonstop and paid attention to every detail. I could not be happier with the results and highly recommend them! Thank you AllGreen!

In Sep 2019 AllGreen removed the old timber stair/walkway in my back yard and rebuilt it with a lovely stone structure. The workmanship was outstanding -- from the careful excavation to the reinforced concrete foundation to the carefully finished stone work. Every aspect of the project was handled well -- timely scheduling, thorough cleanup each day, prompt removal of all debris, to careful raking, grading, and seeding at the end. Project Manager Kyle Jansen and foreman Carlos could not have been better to work with or more willing to be helpful. I am extremely pleased!

John Waldron came out to look at our walkway and tree. It turns out the walkway was worse off than we thought. John very carefully explained the problems and possible solutions, providing us with several options. I enjoyed working with him very much. The quote was reasonable, but higher than we planned for the extra things we wanted done. We plan to have the work
