Expert Detention & Retention Pond Installation in Alexandria, VA

Detention and retention pond installation is a proven way to control stormwater runoff on Alexandria, VA properties. At AllGreen Solutions Stormwater Management, we design and install both pond types based on your site's drainage load, soil conditions, and runoff patterns. Alexandria sits where Piedmont clay uplands meet the coastal plain, and that clay-heavy soil limits natural infiltration. Without a properly sized pond, runoff moves fast, picks up pollutants, and flows directly into local waterways like Four Mile Run and Cameron Run before reaching the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. A detention pond holds runoff temporarily and releases it at a controlled rate. A retention pond holds a permanent pool that filters sediment and nutrients before discharge. Both function as approved Best Management Practices under Alexandria's Virginia Erosion and Stormwater Management Program. We assess your site, size the pond to meet runoff reduction targets, and install all inlet, outlet, and embankment components to spec. Contact AllGreen Solutions to schedule a site assessment for your Alexandria property.

Detention & Retention Pond Installation FAQ

Common questions about detention & retention pond installation in Alexandria, VA.

The right choice depends on your site's drainage area, soil type, and runoff volume. A detention pond releases water slowly after a storm, while a retention pond holds a permanent pool that filters pollutants year-round.

Commercial sites, HOA communities, and larger residential parcels in Alexandria most often require a pond when development increases impervious surface area. Properties in low-lying areas or on clay-heavy soil also benefit from on-site pond storage.

Yes, pond owners in Alexandria are responsible for keeping their stormwater facility in working order. Routine maintenance includes sediment removal, vegetation management, and inspection of inlet and outlet structures.

Yes, a correctly sized pond captures and holds runoff during storms, reducing the volume and speed of water leaving your site. This directly lowers flood risk for structures, parking areas, and adjacent properties in Alexandria.

We calculate existing and proposed runoff rates based on your site's impervious area, drainage patterns, and soil conditions in Alexandria. That data drives the pond sizing to meet local stormwater management targets.

Alexandria's Stormwater Utility Fee Credit Program allows property owners who install eligible BMPs to apply for a fee reduction. We recommend contacting the City of Alexandria's Stormwater Management Division to confirm eligibility for your specific installation.

In Sep 2019 AllGreen removed the old timber stair/walkway in my back yard and rebuilt it with a lovely stone structure. The workmanship was outstanding -- from the careful excavation to the reinforced concrete foundation to the carefully finished stone work. Every aspect of the project was handled well -- timely scheduling, thorough cleanup each day, prompt removal of all debris, to careful raking, grading, and seeding at the end. Project Manager Kyle Jansen and foreman Carlos could not have been better to work with or more willing to be helpful. I am extremely pleased!

John Waldron came out to look at our walkway and tree. It turns out the walkway was worse off than we thought. John very carefully explained the problems and possible solutions, providing us with several options. I enjoyed working with him very much. The quote was reasonable, but higher than we planned for the extra things we wanted done. We plan to have the work
